THE SHORT ANSWER

Hypothetical example: a Quinte West nondestructive-testing technologist is admitted in TN status to support a US engineering team. Her husband is a registered practical nurse and their daughter is seventeen. TD status lets the husband and daughter accompany her and study, but neither may work, and the daughter's TD ends when she turns twenty-one. The plan should give each of them a route of their own, sequenced against the principal's three-year admission period. Hypothetical example: a Quinte West occupational therapist is considering a TN position while her spouse operates a Canadian online retail business. They must decide whether the spouse will remain in Canada to perform the work, qualify for a separate status, or pause the business after moving. Dependant status does not make remote work from US soil permissible simply because customers and payroll remain in Canada, so the household's income plan must be settled before the move.

01

Start from what dependent status allows

TD dependants may live in the United States with the TN professional and may enrol in school or university, but they are not employment-authorized. There is no application for work permission in TD. The husband may not take casual shifts, volunteer in a role that would otherwise be paid, or work remotely from US soil for his Ontario employer, since the work is performed in the United States. The daughter may attend high school and later college in TD status. Both hold status only as long as the principal holds TN, so an extension of her status must be filed with theirs in view. The first household review should list each person's intended location, school plan, paid activity and current status through the principal's next expiry date. That document distinguishes study from employment and catches a common mistake: treating a Canadian employer, foreign payroll or online clients as an exception to the restriction. If a dependant needs to earn income in the United States, the family should investigate an independent category before relying on the principal's admission.

02

Map the husband's credential to a category of his own

Registered Nurse is a listed USMCA profession requiring a state or provincial registered-nurse licence or a Licenciatura degree; a practical-nursing diploma and RPN registration do not meet it. His options are to complete the education and licensing that would make him a registered nurse, obtain a US state licence, and then seek his own TN with a prearranged US nursing job; to pursue a different listed profession his education supports; or to remain in TD and study, perhaps toward that registered-nurse credential. Each option has a timeline, and the useful exercise is to lay the timeline beside the principal's I-94 expiry so that his licence and job offer do not arrive after her status has to be renewed. Choose the independent route by working backwards from the intended first day of paid work. The key records are the actual licence, education record, prospective US duties and a written offer, not the household's assumption that one health credential resembles another. If the spouse will study toward a qualifying credential, budget the time and confirm which status permits that study; a planned licence date is not authorization to work before the category is granted.

03

Calendar the daughter's twenty-first birthday

A seventeen-year-old has four years of TD eligibility. If she is still in the United States at twenty-one, she needs her own status: a student visa if she is enrolled, or a work category if she qualifies. The change should be planned a year ahead, because a student application from inside the United States and one made from Canada follow different procedures and timelines. If she would rather begin university in Canada, her TD status simply ends when she leaves and she may visit her parents. Whatever the choice, the family should record her status and the principal's on one calendar and review it at each extension, since a lapse for the daughter is not cured by the parents' continuing status. The concrete decision is whether she will remain in the United States for school after dependent eligibility ends or return to Canada for the next stage. Put her program dates, passport validity, application lead time and the principal's expiry on the same calendar. That sequencing avoids a last-minute change request based on an assumption that a parent's renewal automatically extends an adult child's status.
