Read the general life across the border overview
Hypothetical example: a Stirling-Rawdon operations manager transfers to an American affiliate, and his wife, a veterinary technician, and their twelve- and nineteen-year-old children go with him. As dependants in L-2 status, his wife is employment-authorized incident to status and the children may attend school. That single fact is often the difference between a move that works financially and one that does not, and it deserves to be planned rather than discovered. Hypothetical example: a radiography-equipment project manager receives a U.S. offer while her spouse plans to continue practising as an optician and their adult child expects to work part-time. The decision is not merely whether the family can accompany her; it is which individual plans are authorized under the proposed statuses and which require separate immigration or licensing steps. Create a person-by-person worksheet before accepting the assignment.
Work authorization is not a licence to practise
The spouse of an intracompany transferee may work without applying separately for permission, which puts her in a very different position from the dependant of a professional in the TN category, who may not work at all. What her status does not do is qualify her for a regulated occupation. Veterinary technology, nursing, teaching, accounting and the trades are regulated at state level, and an Ontario credential may require examination, additional coursework or a supervised period before it is recognized. Find out which applies in the destination state before the household relies on that income, and begin the licensing process early since it runs on its own schedule. Ask the state regulator for the exact pathway before paying for relocation. Save the response, required examinations, credential-evaluation rules and expected processing steps. Permission to work under an accompanying status and permission to practise a regulated occupation are separate questions with separate decision-makers.
Give the nineteen-year-old a calendar
A dependent child may live in the United States and study, but may not work, and the status ends at twenty-one. A nineteen-year-old therefore has a defined runway and needs a decision within it: enrol in an American institution and change to student status in good time, study in Canada and visit, or qualify for a status of her own. The change from dependent to student status requires preparation and follows different procedures depending on whether it is applied for from inside the United States or from Canada, so start a year ahead. Her younger sibling has longer, but the same date arrives eventually and belongs on the same calendar. A child approaching the dependent age limit needs a dated choice: study in the United States, study elsewhere, seek an independent category, or remain outside the move. School admission letters, tuition deadlines and status rules should be coordinated early. Do not let a household’s emotional preference substitute for a viable status plan.
Keep the household statuses tied together deliberately
Dependants derive their status from the principal, so an extension for him is an extension for all of them and a lapse for him affects everyone. Keep one page listing each person's status, admission record and expiry date, and review it whenever anything changes at the company: a promotion, a transfer to another group entity, a change of role, or the approach of the maximum period in the classification. Where the principal's classification has a five- or seven-year limit, that limit is also the outer edge of the family's stay in these statuses, which should be part of the conversation about whether the move is temporary or the beginning of something permanent. Hypothetical example: a twenty-year-old dependent starts a paid remote internship after moving with an L-1 parent. The practical decision is whether that activity is authorized before the first workday, not whether the employer is located abroad. Record each family member’s admission expiry and reassess the plan whenever the principal’s role or maximum stay changes.
