Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Treat licensure as a separate gate
Immigration classification permits a person to be in the United States working in a professional role. It does not authorize the practice of a regulated profession; that comes from the state board, on its own terms and its own timetable. Contact the board early, find out what it requires from an Ontario graduate, what examinations apply, how long verification of credentials takes and when the board actually meets. Those answers usually set the earliest realistic start date, and an employer that has not hired across the border before may not know they exist.
Resolve the ownership of the Ontario practice
Self-employment in the United States is not permitted in this category, so the position must be genuine employment with an American employer that controls the work. Continuing to own a veterinary practice in Ontario is not itself United States self-employment, but any ownership interest in the American employer should be disclosed and explained, and an offer that includes a partnership track needs examination now rather than at the point it vests. Decide too what happens to the Ontario practice: sold, managed by an associate, or wound down, since the answer affects both the application and the family's finances.
Get the offer letter to match the entry
The letter should name the profession as it appears in the list, describe the veterinary work to be performed, state the qualification relied upon, confirm the position is employment, and give the period sought, which may run up to three years at a time. Where a licence is pending, the letter should describe the intended duties accurately rather than implying practice the applicant is not yet permitted to undertake. Vague language about supporting the practice or assisting the team invites questions that a precise description would have prevented.
Choose the route with the licence in mind
A Canadian citizen may apply at a port of entry or preclearance location with proof of citizenship, the employer's letter, the degree and any licence, or the employer may file Form I-129 in advance. No visa stamp is issued. Where licensure is still in progress, an advance petition allows the position and its timing to be described fully in writing, and it avoids arriving at a border with a story about a licence that has not yet been granted. Whichever route is chosen, the work performed must match what was described. Before choosing a presentation method, test the employment relationship on paper. Identify who sets the hours, supplies the clients, signs the work product, pays the remuneration, and can end the engagement. That exercise exposes arrangements that look like a consultancy but are actually an applicant directing their own American enterprise. It also gives the employer a clean record for deciding whether the role, the qualification, and the requested period fit together.
