Only reasons arising from the household's own circumstances, such as a job start, a school year or a family situation. Where a program is recent and its procedures are still settling, and an existing route is already in progress, time spent verifying costs nothing and protects against an expensive reversal.
Do not let a suggestion become a deadline
A suggestion from a relative or a colleague often arrives with an implied urgency that has no source. Identify the actual dates in the household's life, then ask whether any of them require a decision this month. Use the interval for three things: confirm the status of the existing application, read the official program materials properly, and take advice on how the routes interact. If after that the newer route still looks better, the decision will be a considered one, and if it does not, nothing has been lost except a few weeks of reading. What should never happen is a large irrecoverable payment made while a viable route is already underway and nobody has checked what one does to the other.
Hypothetical example: a Tyendinaga regional software-sales director needs to decide whether to renew current status while a Gold Card application is considered. The official site currently accepts applications and processing fees, after which USCIS directs applicants to complete Form I-140G; vetting, the gift request, and EB-1 or EB-2 visa adjudication follow. Keep every existing status deadline active because filing does not itself authorize travel or employment or guarantee permanent residence. Record the date each source was checked, and maintain the existing calendar while the application proceeds so optimism does not become unauthorized presence.
